Born on January 14, 1968, in Chicago, Illinois, Johnni Black is of Italian descent and was raised with a Catholic school education. She went on to study psychology at the University of Illinois before pursuing a military career, eventually achieving the rank of Captain in the United States Army, where she was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Black married David Johnson in October 1995 — a fellow service member who performed under the name Michael Black. Johnson served as a Sergeant First Class, while Black held her commission as a Captain.
